Abstract
The outline of this paper is to analyze current Korean EMR in outpatients setting. It involves drivers for an EMR in Korea, hurdles for an EMR, and evaluation of current EMR products I have chosen three exemplary EMR software programs and compared their function. Many factors have contributed the rapid increase in EMR use in Korea, such as cost saving effect of EMR, the explosive increase of Internet use in various areas, well-organized Internet infrastructure, and less administrative work. Many obstacles are also expected to EMR introduction in the future, such as no standardization in EMR system, legal issues, security and confidentiality and privacy issues, physicians¡¯ resistance to practice behavior change, and installation costs. There are many challenges ahead for the EMR in outpatient setting, such as the development of more convenient data input methods, construction of Korean digital medical knowledge system, medical care quality and medical error prevention by EMR, Web-based clinical communication and health education tool. Aside from these technical and data problems, much effort should be made for effective and rapid adoption and spread of EMR system.
